GDI Hub is a research and practice centre driving disability innovation for a fairer world. Disability innovation is part of a bigger movement for disability justice, which must disrupt current ideas and practice to create new possibilities.
Operational in 61 countries, we work with more than 70 partners through our AT2030 programme, delivering projects across a portfolio of £50m. GDI Hub has reached 29 million people since its launch in 2016 by developing bold approaches, building innovative partnerships, and creating ecosystems to accelerate change.
R2D2 Lab | IIT Madras
The TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras is involved in research related to human movement and the design and development of rehabilitation and assistive devices for people with movement impairments. R2D2 engineers affordable products for rehabilitation needs in India and beyond, works with clinical specialists, NGOs, hospitals, etc., to field-test the designs, and fosters a research environment to evaluate assistive device designs from biomechanical and functional standpoints.
Using appropriate technology, scientific methods and innovative translational models, R2D2 aims to enable easy accessibility and affordability of assistive devices and rehabilitation resources. R2D2 has successfully transferred technology to like-minded industrial partners and nurtures AT startups such as NeoMotion, Thira and Thryv.
AT2030 programme tests ‘what works’ to improve access to life-changing Assistive Technology (AT) for all.
Led by Global Disability Innovation Hub and funded by UK aid, AT2030 reached 29 million people in 61 countries, driving a lifetime of potential. In 2023 UK aid announced a further £31 million investment to the AT2030 programme.
The National Center for Assistive Health Technologies (NCAHT) is a multi-centric project initiated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) pioneering showcase and innovation for advancing Assistive Technology (AT) R&D. Its mission is to empower users by reshaping perspectives and minimizing unconscious biases among engineers, developers, policymakers, and the public. Functioning as a dynamic platform, it fosters user-innovator, user-policymaker and user-rehabilitation professional interactions.
Additionally, NCAHT acts as a training hub, equipping users, rehabilitation and AT professionals with expertise and playing a vital role in shaping innovative AT solutions and progressive policies.
