Wheelchair users and others with mobility disabilities often cannot open and close doors unless they have been fitted with power assisted mechanisms / push-buttons. However, such mechanisms are expensive (costing thousands of dollars per door) and often unreliable, meaning that buildings shy away from installing them. How can we create a lower-cost and more reliable design for automatic-opening doors?
