Hand Pain from Manual Wheelchair Propulsion
Target Audience: Persons with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
The feel of the problem: Chronic hand pain, discomfort, and frustration due to repetitive strain injuries from propelling their wheelchairs. They may feel helpless and concerned about the long-term impact on their functional independence and overall health.
When: Extended periods of wheelchair use or when navigating rough or uneven terrain. It is especially pronounced during activities requiring frequent or strenuous wheelchair propulsion.
Implication: Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and arthritis. This results in decreased mobility and independence.
